Vanadium flow batteries are widely acknowledged as long duration storage for stationary applications. Nevertheless, a huge variety of flow battery technologies have been published in literature during the last four years.

In this talk the advantages and disadvantages of vanadium flow battery technology will be presented along with selected results from RedoxWind project (building of a 2MW/20MWh VRFB at Fraunhofer ICT).

The conventional VRFB will be contrasted with different new flow battery systems, which will be also categorized according to their future potential. Also some new results of the research activities at Fraunhofer ICT will be given.
