Ion migration pathways in electrode materials

A short introduction to battery research seen from a crystallographers’ point of view. A large part of my PhD has involved participation in the invention and testing of a novel visualization technique: The Procrystal Analysis. Application to a wide range of electrode materials for Li-ion battery applications prove the methods’ validity in describing the migration of ions in dense crystal lattices, in spite of the simple calculation principle. The analysis can be utilized for fast examination of Li-ion migration in new candidates for improved electrode materials as an initial test of the ion conduction properties.
